When not touring the world every night for millions of adoring fans, rockstars just want to enjoy their much-earned downtime. Now what do these rock stars do when not actively thinking about music? Well, what they do ranges from very fun to super weird. From alien hunting to barbecuing, sky diving, and everything in between, rockstars like to keep busy. This week’s blog looks at the extravagant extracurricular activities of rockstars.

Tom Delonge Proves That Aliens Exist

Many know Tom Delonge as the front man for Blink -182. Writer of hit songs “All The Small Things” “What’s My Age Again?” and “Aliens Exist.” That last track would serve to be autobiographical for Delonge as he spent half of his life searching for ET’s. As far back as the early 2000’s Delonge has talked passionately about Little Green Men. Delonge even has a personal collection of tapes with testimonies from UFO witnesses. In 2015 Delonge quit Blink-182 to pursue aliens. Yep, you read that right. He even wrote on Twitter that he had to leave over a national security issue.  Thankfully in 2021 it was announced that Delonge had phoned home and cut his ties with the US government. He has since returned to Blink-182 and they plan on reuniting at Coachella this weekend.

Learn To Fry: Dave Grohls’ Cooking Obsession

There is nothing Dave Grohl can’t do. Whether it’s playing drums for multiple bands, reuniting Led Zeppelin, or performing a tour on throne, he can do it all. Most recently the front man has taken time to barbecue for family, friends, and those in need. It started for Grohl when he was held with a broken leg. He was gifted a Green Egg by one of his band mates, and he practiced on it by making ribs for his kids. From there it became an obsession for him. As the cooking got better, the parties got bigger, soon he was making food on a new grill for over 50 people. Making brisket, pork amongst other delicious delicacies. When wildfires ravaged California in 2021, Grohl grilled for 24 hours to help those displaced by the flames.

High Speed Dirt:  Dave Mustaine Takes To The Sky

When misquoted in an interview, a reporter thought Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine skydived. Mustaine, always wanting to be in control of a situation, decided to actually do it. He wanted to have the experience as backup in case he was outed by a reporter for not performing this death defying arial stunt. To his surprise, Mustaine loved the activity and has since invited band members and members of Alice in Chains to join him.

Sting Em All: James Hetfield; Beekeeper

Following his stint as “The Master of Puppets”, James Hetfield is living peacefully as a beekeeper. The singer keeps several hives of the honey makers in at his California home.  Despite the newfound activity, it is not without its dangers. Hetfield was once stung, which then resulted in a full-on bee revolution after the other bees sensed the sting. Though for Hetfield, keeping those bees happy and healthy is a great joy in his life after years of turmoil.

Fly As High as an Eagle: Bruce Dickenson Airline Pilot

The man who once sung about the “Flight of Icarus” flies commercial airlines too close to the sun. Dickenson started by practicing with the band’s touring plane Ed Force One, named after their mascot Eddie. He even helped set up his own training academy, to help train the next generation of pilots. Seems like Tom Cruise has got some competition in the aviation industry.

Neil Young Has a Heart of Gold

Neil Young developed an affinity for model trains as a way of therapeutically helping his autistic son. He had grown and nurtured his love of model trains in the decades since. Neil became so passionate about his hobby that he even managed to sell over 230 pieces of his extensive collection for nearly $300,000 in 2017.  The proceeds of which went to Youngs Bridge School, which Neil and his wife Pegi had founded for children with speech and learning disabilities.
