With the new Beatles song “Now and Then” coming out this Friday, I thought I’d delve into some Halloween related Beatles lore.

In December of 1980, tragic news struck the world that John Lennon had been shot. It was news that resonated with the world that the man who had told us to “Imagine” a place of peace and prosperity was gunned down in horrific violence. A memorial vigil was set up at St. Georges Plateau in Liverpool and 100,000 citizens sang “Give Peace a Chance” by candlelight. Despite his songs and sons keeping his spirit alive, no one would have ever thought that his presence would ever be felt again. Until recently.

The spirit of John Lennon has been sighted and “talked to” in The Dakota, the famous hotel where he lived and died. A gothic building that Gozer the Gozarian would feel more at home at than the former Beatle. Even Lennon himself has claimed to have witnessed hauntings here. He claims to have seen the ghost of a crying baby, and even a woman walking towards him in the hotel hallway before vanishing.

As for the Beatle himself, two residents of the building, Joey Harrow and Amanda Moores claimed they saw John Lennon standing in the very doorway where he had been shot. They claim he was bathed in an eerie light and appeared lost in thought. His wife, Yoko Ono, claimed to have seen her husband in the apartment they once shared. He was sitting by himself at a piano, telling Yoko “I will always be with you.”

For John Lennon, he always promised to send his friends and loved ones a white feather as a sign for when he passed away. During the recording of the song “Free as a Bird”, George, Paul and Ringo received a surprise. They claimed to hear their former friends’ name during the recording and when a group photo was taken, a white peacock wandered into the shot. This surprised the Beatles, thinking it was John coming to them from beyond the grave.

Whether or not you believe, John Lennon’s spirit will live on alongside George Harrison with the final Beatles release, “Now and Then” due out Friday. The most natural thing about this supernatural recording is that it uses archive vocal recordings and not AI as previously mentioned. Lennon’s spirit will live on for fans one more time.
